Computer repair as a trade: a day on the bench

What a hardware support technician does all day, which repairs suit a desktop and which a laptop, and how a support desk records a machine it keeps in service.

What does a hardware support technician do all day?

A hardware support technician spends the day triaging machines that arrive on the bench, confirming the fault, quoting the fix and returning the machine in a state the owner can use. The work is mostly diagnosis, parts and records, not soldering. A desktop that will not post, a laptop that throttles under load, a drive that clicks: each one is logged, tested and either repaired or written off with a reason. The trade sits between two pressures. The customer wants a working machine back quickly and cheaply. The machine itself has a specification that decides what is worth spending. A technician who ignores the second pressure returns a machine that fails again in a month.

Most benches run a simple order. Intake, visual inspection, power test, component test, quote, repair, soak test, handover. The order matters because it stops a technician chasing a symptom before the obvious cause is ruled out. A laptop that shuts down at random is often a blocked fan and dried thermal paste, not a failing board.

Which repairs are worth doing on a desktop?

A desktop is the easier of the two to keep in service, because its parts are standard and reachable. Memory, storage, power supply, graphics card and cooling are all replaceable with a screwdriver and a little patience. That changes the economics. A machine with a sound processor and board can take a new SSD and more memory and run for years.

The repairs that pay on a desktop are storage, memory, cooling and power. A mechanical drive replaced by a solid state drive removes the most common cause of a slow machine. A failing power supply is a cheap swap that protects everything downstream. Dust and thermal paste cost little and restore the temperatures the processor was designed for.

The repairs that rarely pay are board level faults on an old platform. Once a technician is reflowing a chipset or replacing capacitors, the labour exceeds the value of the machine. The honest answer is a replacement board if one can be found, or a new machine.

Which repairs are worth doing on a laptop?

A laptop is a different trade. The parts are proprietary, the clearances are tight and the whole machine is built around the screen and the battery. Some repairs are still straightforward: memory and storage on models with an access panel, the battery on most business machines, the fan and heatsink on anything with a service manual.

The repairs that stop being economic are the ones tied to the chassis and the board. A cracked hinge often means a new base assembly. Liquid damage means corrosion that spreads. A failed charging circuit on a soldered board is an workshop job, and the quote has to reflect the risk that the fault returns.

The deciding factor is the service manual. A machine with published procedures and available parts is worth opening. A machine with glued panels and no parts supply is not.

How does a support desk document a machine it keeps in service?

A support desk records a machine the way a garage records a car. The record starts with the specification: processor, memory, storage, screen, power supply and cooling. It then carries the fault, the tests run, the parts fitted and the result of the soak test. Without that record, the next technician repeats the diagnosis.

The record has to be usable by someone who was not there. That means plain entries, dated, with the serial number and the customer reference. A note that says "no post, reseated memory, working" is worth more than a paragraph of speculation.

Good desks also record what was declined. A customer who refuses a recommended repair should have that in writing, because it protects both sides if the machine fails again. The record is not bureaucracy. It is the difference between a repair and a guess.

What arrives on the bench in a normal week?

A normal week is unglamorous. The common arrivals are slow machines, noisy machines, machines that will not charge and machines that will not start. Slow usually means a mechanical drive or a full disk. Noisy usually means a fan or a bearing. No charge usually means the cable, the port or the battery. No start usually means power, memory or the board.

The pattern is stable because the failure modes are stable. Storage wears, fans clog, batteries age, power supplies drift. A technician who has seen the pattern can often name the likely cause before opening the case, then confirm it with a test.

The unusual arrivals are the interesting ones: a machine with a fault that only appears under load, a laptop with a intermittent screen cable, a desktop that reboots when the heating comes on. These take time, and time is what the quote has to cover.

What tools and tests does the bench rely on?

A bench needs less than people expect. A known good power supply, a POST card, a spare stick of memory, a spare drive and a bootable diagnostic stick cover most desktops. For laptops, a set of drivers, a multimeter and the service manual cover most of the rest.

The tests are simple and repeatable. Power test, memory test, storage test, temperature test under load, and a soak test before handover. Each one answers a question and rules out a cause. The soak test is the one that catches the repair that only works cold.

Software matters as much as hardware. A machine returned with a fresh drive needs an operating system, updates, drivers and a backup routine. A repair that leaves the customer without a backup is half a repair.

When should a machine be replaced rather than repaired?

The decision is arithmetic. If the quote approaches the cost of a comparable used machine, repair stops making sense. If the machine cannot run the software the owner needs, no repair will fix that. If parts are unavailable, the bench cannot help.

The honest conversation is about the next two years, not the last two. A desktop with a current processor and enough memory can be upgraded. A laptop with a soldered processor and a worn chassis usually cannot. The technician's job is to say which one the customer has.

What does the trade ask of the people in it?

It asks for patience and a method. Most faults are found by ruling things out, not by insight. It asks for honesty about what a repair will achieve, because a customer who is oversold will not return. It asks for records, because the next person on the bench needs them.

It also asks for a line between what a owner can do and what belongs to a workshop. Cleaning a fan and fitting a drive are within reach. Board level work is not. A desk that documents that line clearly does the customer a service, whether the machine is a desktop, a laptop or a second hand unit from a corporate fleet.
